Montes De Oca Nature Reserve in La Guajira

The Montes de Oca are located at the northern end of the Serranía del Perijá in Zulia State, and comprise the northernmost portion of the Eastern Cordillera. This mountainous system is located in the southeastern region of the department of La Guajira, and serves as the international boundary between the republics of Colombia and Venezuela. Immersed in this orographic system is also the Montes de Oca Protective Forest Reserve, which occupies an area of ​​8,494.15 hectares and is located in the jurisdiction of the Guajiro municipalities of Maicao (6,973.66 ha) and Albania (1,520, 49 ha); The reserve has an elongated shape and its axis is oriented in a southwest-northeast direction, measuring about 25 kilometers wide on average. Its altitudinal limits oscillate between 200 and 800 masl in the Carraipía hill, which represents the highest point in this sector.

Due to its location, the Montes de Oca are considered an altitudinal corridor between the páramos of the center of the Serranía del Perijá and xerophytic areas of the upper-middle Guajira, and constitute an obligatory point of contact between biotascis and trans-Andean species in North America. from the south. From a biogeographical point of view, they form part of the peri-Caribbean arid belt and the Norandina region (Perijá and Guajira-Alto Cesar) and cover a fairly old area, geologically comparable to that of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
